We started this campaign in August 2006 when we noticed that people were crossing over Paston Parkway to go to Somerfield store or KFC. As it was a dual carriageway it was very difficult to cross with fast moving traffic coming from all direction. A few accidents had already happened involving cars, lorries and people, one person who was seriously injured later died in January 2008 as a direct result of those injuries. Search Accident Data at the following. http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk There have been many accidents on this stretch of road as many as 46 in most resent years. These include 4 to 5 lorries turning over and cars leaving the road and hitting trees. So really it was only a matter of time before a person is killed. So we started a petition for a footbridge over the Paston Parkway as there was no proper crossing in place there and we all felt that a foot bridge would be a safer option. We eventually collected 1000.00 signatures for a footbridge and this we presented to a full Peterborough City Council in November of that year. We also started having protests on the crossing point at Paston Parkway where we would walk up and down along the grass vergers waving banners. Lorries and cars would hoot in support and Radio Cambridge was there and our local Councilor too. We seem to make an impacted as it sparked off furious debates as letters were published in the local papers, as to what the Peterborough City Council should do. To make it even better we appeared on BBC and ITV and heard on Radio. There is a photo of a family crossing the notorious Paston Parkway at this point off the Eye Road Walk-way. |
